#5 Information Visualisation and Typography (Backtrack!!!)

So follow feedback we received on our project, we needed to provide a context for the actual us of AR there was no point in using AR if it didn’t add anything to the interaction. This meant that we had to return to the drawing board on what type of AR we were using up until this point we had been using Markerless AR which allowed for a immersive AR experience but no substance. I thought of a good use case for AR with in the context of a museum for example the science museum.

This added context to our Idea and gave us a reason for using AR. In many museums they have plaques which contains information about an exhibit or a particular installation in the museum. I thought this would be a good way to get user to activate AR. This meant that we had to return to Vuforia to use marker based AR. This provided us a whole new design problem as we now had a marker to design too.

The original Marker (seen above) used for testing wasn’t anything that added to the user interaction between the UI on screen and the plaque. It was highlighted to us in a crit session that this would be a good thing to explore as relating the two designs together allowed the user to better understand the use of the plaque and the information that the AR app added.

The first design was a simple design which had a grid to help with the AR tracking.

Plaque Design. David Valente

This plaque was an advancement on the first marker. This plaque was to provide a paragraph explaining to the user what time dilation was and that they could augment the idea using a phone as seen at the bottom. This marker tracked well because of the layout of it but wasn’t visually appealing to the user and didn’t work well with our current UI design.

At this point we had changed our UI design for working with children and there was no likeness between the two. The next image shows a design that was produced for use with children.

This plaque design was produced for use with our UI for children it showed explained time dilation but also correspond to the UI design better than we had done before. Because we were working with a plaque now it was important that the UI worked with it but we had bigger issues. In the feedback session it was highlighted to us that the concept was not clear enough for a 10 year old to understand and that we should refocus our efforts into producing a concept that worked for people with a better understanding. This is what we need to go away and work on.
