Overview - Explore working within a rigid set of design rules for an interface that I have not designed for before which is the Apple Watch interface through the design challenge of a fitness app.


Context

This project has developed from a personal experience of not being able to locate a fitness training app which meets the specific needs I require. The aim of this project is to develop an app which meets these needs. The interface will be situated within the Apple ecosystem and the aim of this first project is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the design restriction and recommendations set out in the Apple design guidelines here. Using this to develop an interface for the Apple Watch that explores the issues that I have found through the use of existing apps, as well as introduce some new ideas.


Research

Primary User Research will provide an insight into how people want to use a fitness app and what specific tools they want to have access too.

Areas of Research Clearly define what areas will need to be researched and how to go about it.

  • Machine Learning - to look at how to develop training plans for users based upon what they currently do and the level that they are at. This needs to be a theoretical understanding of the topic and how it can be applied to the specific use case.

  • Sports Science - This is important to understand what a users needs outside of what they want from an app, but it is also important to understand this so that a user can't hurt themselves when following a session created by the machine learning system.

Ethnography Research to developing a clear understanding of who wants to use the app and what cultures they subscribe to and specifically what is the motivation for them using the app. Self improvement? Competition? striving for a specific goal.


Form - The project form is several interface designs and clear definition of specific user groups as well a a presentation which brings together the full design process.


Scope

This project is to be a relatively short and aim to look at clearly defining a brief and look at the key ways in which the project should be executed. The scope for the project is to develop a clear interface that follows Apple design guidelines and develop an understanding of what a user wants from a fitness app and the different ways a user interacts with a fitness app. Audio, Visual, Tactile.


Tools & Methods - Pen, Paper, Computer will all be used to sketch interfaces and allow for rapid iteration to the use of a computer for a more complete and defined interface.
