Final Project - VR Hands - 10

Writer's picture: WillWill

One of the first an most important implementations for this project is VR hands. I have spent the last few days working on the animations and animation controller for the hands of the user in VR. according the Casey Fictum the author of VR UX getting hand interactions that are close to real life are important as it allows the user to feel a connection with the in game objects and elements that they are trying to interact with.

The video shows some of the basic interactions that the user can perform with their hands at the moment. Such as picking up an object and throwing it as well as interacting with some basic UI elements. I plan on expanding this to work with specific casualty interactions which I plan to cover in a blog post show a WIP of my project when I have something worth showing such as UI, Some Basic Interactions as well as audio.

Currently the hands are grey and not representative of a colour or a persons actual hand. There are several reasons for this. Firstly the reason that they are not skin colour or representative of a real hand apart from form is that a user may find that they have a detachment from their hands if they are representative of a real hand but that hand is not theirs. This is similar to the uncanny valley issues that arise in animation in movies when trying to represent life like objects such as human skin and especially faces.
