Projection Mapping – Concept

Writer's picture: WillWill

Projection Mapping, is away in which projectors can be used to map visually onto different surfaces, for example projecting onto the front of a building or onto a flight of stairs, more interesting examples of projection mapping I have seen involve some sort of human interaction. This can be seen with performance pieces that use projection mapping to enhance the experience. It has also been used as a great tool for advertisement. Toyota used projection mapping to introduce the hybrid Toyota Auris. I find this a clever use of the technology which is seen at the cutting edge of projecting in use with the cutting edge hybrid technology at the time. The video is linked below:

Projection Mapping is interesting when looking in context with the displaying of Information. The Auris advert is a good example of this as it introduces hybrid as a new technology with interesting visualisations of charging the car and how it is transferred to moving the car.

For our project we decided that information in the Library was a good place to start as there was plenty of information that could be displayed. we settled on displaying the information about room bookings, for the group study rooms. This was an interesting task as there was many places that we could project the information, as well as many different ways to project the information.

As this task was about projection mapping we looked to see if we could find a way to project which would best use the technology, this meant going away from projecting onto a singular flat surface. We settled onto projecting directly onto the steps leading up to the Group Study Rooms, this is because the information was right in front of the person that required it as well as it being large enough to be seen from a distance(The other side of the Library).

Mai Setting up the Projector

We setup a small mock up in the library which gives a demonstration of power that projection mapping can have when used.

Projection Mapping Full setup

We managed to get a good representation of projection mapping in the library for data representation. I also put together a small animation which demonstrates some of the functionality that we propose would increase the understanding of the information.

As you can see from the images and the animation there are Room numbers along the bottom of the stairs which denote which room the stair section is representing. Each Stair represents an hour of time from 08:00 to 23:00, there are numbers next to each step but we printed them to small. The colour represents if the room is available to use, or if it has been booked already. The animation also shows that once the hour has been completed the light will go out on that portion of the projection map.
