Temporal Photography

Writer's picture: WillWill

This project was about how time related to Photography and then would it be possible to turn it into a interactive medium.

The First thing we had to do was create a pinhole camera, we created a pinhole camera using card to make a box. The box had to be light tight so was all black and sealed with tape, light tight means that no light could get in. The reason for this was the fact we were using photographic paper which is light sensitive and changes when it comes into contact with light.

For the first test we decided we would look at taking a photo inside but as you can see from the negative below we didn’t expose the paper for long enough. This created an all white negative with no understandable picture on the paper.

After this we decided to go outside and test the camera again with more light to see if we could produce a better image, but as you can see we over exposed the negative. This meant that the paper went all black and no understandable image could be seen. The two white marks on the paper are from where the tape protected the paper from the light.

Finally, Third time lucky we managed to produce a negative with an image on it. After we had produced this image we then went about turning the negative into a positive image in the Darkroom.

The first image we produced was blurry as we hadn’t sandwiched the two sheets of photo paper together correctly.

After creating this image we used glass to sandwich the sheets of photographic paper together better producing the following  photos, these photos all have different exposures in the darkroom.

After we created the images we had to turn the photos into an interactive medium exploring the temporal relationships with creating images with a pinhole camera.

The link below shows the final interactive design we created.
